No... Lord

We find it hard sometimes to obey our Lord and master, but we must consider who we call Lord. When Peter confronted Jesus and tried to stop him from going to Jerusalem Jesus rebuked him by saying "get behind me Satan." Peter is a good example of our human failings as we follow our Lord.

Peter once again says no to Jesus in the upper room when Jesus came to wash Peter's feet during the Passover meal. When Jesus said Peter would have no part in Him if he wouldn't allow it, Peter responds to having his whole body washed. Isn't this our response from time to time?

What does the word Lord mean when we call Jesus our Lord? To Lord it over someone is to have a position of authority. If we choose to be led by that position of authority, say as a subject to a King then our response is to obey.

When we say no to God then we don't believe He is our King and in charge of our lives. We set ourselves up as our own authority and relegate Christ to a "bathing suit," which is something we use only when the time is right.

In fact when we say "No Lord" we are really saying "no! oh you who must be obeyed." We don't have the right to call Christ Lord if we say no to Him. Because He is Lord He must be obeyed, otherwise He is not the Lord of our lives.

The next time you hear the Lord's voice think about your response.

  1. I know this was written before we saw Gregg B's talk on Fr. Joe. But, the whole thing is at the least, unsettling and at the most, a call for mercy and forgiveness.

LORD implies one who we are to obey with love and joy in all things (Christ as Our Lord is not a slavemaster). However, the "no" over the smallest things in comparison to Fr. Joe living in the shanty areas with the "society throw aways" causes me to stop and take stock of what I am doing.

To those who have much, much is required. That's most of us in America. Not only to give money, but time. To live the gospel of Our Lord, not fight about it with others.

Doesn't it make you wonder what Our Lord must think looking down on the super power, the wealthiest nation with enough Bibles for everyone to own dozens, and yet we never get in the game.

We just fight over the rules or playbook and stay on the sidelines or in the dugout. Pitiful.

Can you imagine - looking at us here in the U.S. with a Church on every corner or more in the South and our favorite past time is wrangling over words...are we infused or imputated? Are we works of the law or grace? Yada yada yada...that is not the point of the gospel. Once you are given the grace to believe, trust and have faith in Our Lord, then you do what He says...like you pointed out.

I fear we in the U.S. are going to answer for alot.

See you next week...you knew we weren't going to be there on Sunday, right?
We will drop you an e-mail.
Blessings and His peace be with you,
    Teri
